Cat Breeds

Abyssinian   The wild look of the Abyssinian should remind one of a miniture cougar.  Aby's  are lithe, muscular, active cats.  Their type is "foreign" with all their contours being rounded.  The coat should be medium-short and "ticked". 

American Shorthair  Americans are medium to large cats with a powerful well-knitbody.  Their coats is short and thick.  They come in all colors but the one most seen at a catshow is the silver tabby.

American Wirehair  Wirehairs have the same basic body type as the American Shorthair but a very different coat. This cat has hairs that are bent and/or crimped so that the coat feels like a brillo pad.

Balinese  A  Balinese is a longhaired Siamese. Their coats are medium-long, and silky in texture. It has the same long, slim body, wedge-shaped head, and vivid blue eyes as a Siamese.

Birman   The Birman is a medium-longhaired "pointed" patterned cat.  It is medium to large in  size.  They should be stocky and strong in both body and head type.  A distinctive feature are the white "gloves" on the front paws and  white "laces" on the hind feet.

Bombay   Bombays are a woman-made breed developed in the late 50's by crossing a Sable Burmese with a Black American Shorthair.  They have a compact, strong body with a shimmering black coat andround copper eyes.

British Shorthair  The British Shorthair is characterized by a body type somewhere between an  American Shorthair and a Persian.  They have a broad round head, rounded ears, and short muzzles.  They have a short coat, muscular body, broad chest, short  strong legs and a relatively short thick tail. 

Burmese   The Burmese has a moderate body type with a fine, short glossy coat.  The overall impression of the Burmese is round - round head, round eyes, round body. 

Chartreux   Chartreux are  large, heavy-boned cats except for their legs which are fine-boned.  They have large, round, expresssive gold eyes.  The coat is dense in texture andblue in color with silver highlights.The ears are small in proportion to the head andsit straight up on top of the head, giving a very alert appearance.

Cornish Rex  The Cornish Rex is the finest-boned of all the cat breeds.  They have a short wavy,  soft coat which comes in all colors and patterns.  They are very lithe with a hard, strong body.

Cymric  The Cymric is a longhaired Manx.

Devon Rex   The coat of the Devon Rex is very soft and wavy.   They are medium to medium-fine boned withhuge, wide-set ears on a relatively small head giving an elf-like appearance tothe face.

Egyptian Mau  The Egyptian Mau is a spotted cat with a semi-foreign body type.  They have a wedge shaped head with rounded contours and gooseberry green almond - shaped eyes. 

Exotic Shorthair  The Exotic is a short-haired versian of the Persian.  It should have a short, soft, plush coat.

Havana  The Havana was developed in England in the 1950's.  Russian Blues,  Siamese and black domestic shorthairs were used to develop the Havana.  They have short, smooth coats and green oval eyes. 

Himalayan  Himalayans are identical to Persians except that they have the pointed color pattern like the Siamese.

Japanese Bobtail   The Japenese Bobtail is a meduium-sized, well muscled cat. The tail is the distinguishing feature of the breed.  It has several "kinks" and is about two inches long forming a bush pom-pom at the end.

Korat  The Korat is a silver-blue cat with green eyes in a heart-shaped face.  The coat is short to medium in length.

Maine Coon   The Maine Coon is a medium to large cat with good boning and a long body.  The  coat is a shaggy all-weather coat. They have large ears with tufts and long ear furniushings, large paws with tufts between the toes and a long plumed tail.

Manx   The Manx is believed to originated in the Isle of Man.  The breed is characterized by a powerful short body, high hindquarters, round rump and ne tail.  The ear set forms an open "U" shape when viewed from behind.

Norwegian Forest Cat  The Norwegian Forest Cat has a medium to large body with hind legs longer than the front legs.  They have a very heavy coat with a woolly undecoat.

Ocicat   The Ocicat is a spotted cat produced from Abyssinians and Siamese.

Oriental Shorthair   The Oriental is identical to the Siamese in conformation and body type.  They may come in any color but the pointed pattern of the Siamese. 

Persian  Persians are one of the more popular breeds of cat.  Under their long hair they are stocky, heavy boned and deep chested.  They have a massive round head with small, wide-set ears and a very flat face.

Ragdolls  Ragdolls are large cats with soft coats that are medium to long in length.  They have a broad modified wedge-shaped head with wide-set oval blue eyes.

Russian Blues   The Russian is a fine boned cat with a short, plush double coat which comes in a solid blue color with silver tipped guard hairs.  The coat, plus brilliant green eyes, lends a distinctiveness to the breed.

Scottish Fold   The Scottish Fold is similar in type to the British Shorthair.  It is distinguised from other breeds by folded ears and large round eyes which give the head an almost completely round appearance.  The body is cobby and the coat should be short and dense.

Siamese   The Siamese of today is a svelte, fine-boned, long-legged, whippy-tailed cat with an extremely hard muscular body and strikingly large ears set at an angle on the head to create a very 
long wedge.

Singapura  The Singapura has large almond eyes, sable brown ticking on an old ivory colored coat that is soft and finely textured.

Somali  The Somali is a long-haired versian of the Abyssinian.  They have a medium-long, silky, dense coat and a bushy tail.

Sphynx  The Sphynx is a nearly hairless cat.  All cats have wrinkles on the face and body underneath their fur.  Their skin feels like suede and they are warm to touch.  Their body should be powerful and the tail should be thin and without kinks.

Tonkinese   The Tonkinese is a hybrid breed created by crossing a burmese with a siamese.  Body type and head type should be intermediate to the two parent breeds.

Turkish Angora   Angora's are lithe, graceful fine-boned cats with medium to small wedge-shaped heads. 

Turkish Van  The Van has a long body, broad chest and a broad modified wedge-shaped head with large almond-shaped eyes.  Their coat is semi-long, has a silky texture.
